Revitalization and Rehabilitation of Historic Water Structures in Bijapur
In 2016 with the support of the District Administration of Vijayapura, IHCNF initiated the detailed identification, mapping survey, and analysis of the historic water system of Bijapur for revitalization and rehabilitation of the same. The technical team from IHCNF identified 268 water structures including Bavadi’s, wells, water towers and Karez system, embankments, conduits, water reservoirs from Jan 2016-April 2016 covering 60 sq km including the 3.55 km Karez line. An initial project report has been prepared to identify the action plan and priority projects for DPR preparation involving rehabilitation /restoration of water structures, landscape and tourism development involving a multidisciplinary team. This project is seen relevant not only for addressing key environmental and water-related issues but also to utilize its potential for tourism to benefit the city’s economy.
